What makes sleepers different

It has to fold away afterward

Inside every sofa bed is a folding steel bed, and the sofa is built around it. The mechanism, deck and mattress take up the room beneath the seat, and the factory allowed for the original foam and cover just once. Any extra thickness in the hide or the cushions eats into the clearance the bed needs to close. That is why we measure the sofa shut before removing anything, and the job is only done when the bed still folds in.

The mattressMatched to the thickness it folds to, not just its dimensions.
Types we work on

Six kinds of sleeper, each built differently

Shut, every one passes for an ordinary sofa. The work depends on what is inside, so sofa bed repair CT quotes follow the mechanism and the room around it rather than how big the piece is.

Where the sofa wears, and where the bed wears

The top wears the way a sofa does and the bottom wears the way a bed does, and each fails on its own. Take pictures with it open, not only shut, because most sleeper problems are visible only once the bed is out.

Cover choices

The material sets the clearance

Most fabric is thinner than leather, and a performance cloth can recover space on a mechanism with little to spare. The only cover we steer people away from is bonded leather, since it peels at the crease, right where a sleeper folds. Related: leather sofa reupholstery and fabric reupholstery.

The process

  1. Take two photos

One with the sofa shut, one with the bed fully extended.

  2. Measure once

Tell us how many inches the closed seat sits above the floor.

  3. Your quote

A single written price covering the cover, frame and mattress work.

  4. Checked shut

We open and close the bed both before the work begins and after it ends.

Before and after

Color restored, no added thickness

The front edge of this leather sleeper had lost its color. We kept the original hide in place and restored the color, so nothing got thicker and the bed shuts just as before. For a sleeper, the least expensive sofa bed repair CT owners can choose is often the one that keeps the cover on. Related: leather color restoration.

Mattress replacement

Thickness matters more than size

Widths and lengths come in standard sizes, but thickness varies. A new mattress may fit the frame and still be too thick to fold beneath the seat, so we match it to the folded height the mechanism was designed for. For the cushions, see sofa cushion replacement.

Straight answers

When repair is not worth it

Straighten a bent main frame and it twists again. A mechanism whose parts are no longer made cannot be fixed. A cavity already filled by an earlier recover has no space left. When we see any of these in the photos, we tell you. Minor problems take less: a split seam is a seam repair, and flat foam is a cushion job.

Could a new cover keep my sofa bed from closing?

Yes, if no one takes measurements. We note the closed dimensions before removing anything, pick the foam and cover to fit them, and open and shut the bed before we call the job done.

Is replacing only the mattress an option?

In most cases, and it is frequently the single repair that helps most. A mattress bought on size alone can have the correct width and length yet be too thick to fold. Give us the closed height and we will tell you what fits.

Pulling the bed out is stiff and it drags. Is that fixable?

Usually. The cause tends to be dirty rollers, a worn pivot, or a frame twisted around a cracked rail. The exception is a bent main frame, and in that case we tell you instead of taking on the work.

Should I repair my sofa bed or replace it?

With a sound mechanism and a solid frame, repair usually makes sense. If parts for the mechanism no longer exist, or a new cover would cost more than the sofa is worth, you hear that from us before spending a dollar.

Most questions are settled by two pictures: the sofa closed and the bed fully extended. Include the closed seat height and we can usually quote from that. We schedule nothing until you approve.
