Read the damage

The four crack types we see

Some cracks are hairlines in the topcoat, others run right through the hide. Choosing the method that fits is how leather crack repair CT owners get a seat they can use for years.

Leather showing hairline lines
Hairline lines
Thin cracks that stay in the topcoat. After a clean and a flexible seal, they stop growing.
Leather showing crease lines
Crease lines
Tight folds where the cushion flexes daily. We soften, fill and recolor the finish so the fold stops splitting it.
Leather showing dry crazing
Dry crazing
A network of cracks across a full cushion whose hide has lost its oils. Conditioning comes first, then filler and color.
Leather showing through-the-grain split
Through-the-grain split
This one has broken the grain itself. Like a small tear, it gets a backing, adhesive and filler before color.

The causes

Why leather cracks in Connecticut homes

Dry leather that keeps flexing will crack. Indoors here, four things do the drying.

Cracks caused by furnace heat
Furnace heat
About five months of dry heated air draw the moisture out of the hide.
Cracks caused by baseboards and vents
Baseboards and vents
Whatever side of the sofa sits against the heat cracks before the rest.
Cracks caused by sunrooms and big windows
Sunrooms and big windows
UV cooks the topcoat until it goes brittle and breaks.
Cracks caused by plain use over time
Plain use over time
Arm tops and seat edges bend thousands of times every year.
Fixable or not?

The material decides

Genuine leather handles crack repair well. Coated fabric sold as leather behaves differently, so we identify what you own before pricing any leather crack repair CT project.

How we work

A fix that flexes as the seat does

  1. Condition

Crazed, dried-out leather is fed first so it bends rather than cracking again.

  2. Fill

Flexible filler goes into the cracks in thin layers, then gets sanded flush.

  3. Recolor

A color blended to your hide is sprayed over the full panel, not only the crack.

  4. Topcoat

A flexible seal at the factory sheen guards the repair every time it flexes.

Once it is fixed

Stop the next crack early

Some attention around heating season beats any bottle on the shelf. Every leather crack repair CT customer gets this advice when we finish.

October

Clean and condition before you turn the heat on. Nothing helps leather in a Connecticut home more.

Humidity

Aim for indoor humidity of roughly 40 to 50 percent in winter. A small humidifier in the den shows a clear difference.

Placement

Keep the sofa about two feet from baseboard heat or floor registers, and draw the blinds on windows facing south.

Spring

Give it a gentle clean once the furnace goes off, and touch up the topcoat on the arms if they look dull.

Leather Conditioning

Is cracked leather actually fixable?

On real leather, nearly always. Leather crack repair CT owners hire us for fills each crack, recolors the panel and seals it under a flexible coat. Bonded leather is the exception: we can patch it, but a new cover is the fix that lasts.

Will the cracks return?

The repaired areas get a finish that flexes along with the leather. Regular conditioning and keeping the piece out of direct heat are what prevent fresh cracks.

Why is my leather cracking more in the winter?

Furnace heat keeps indoor air dry for months, and the hide gives up the moisture that keeps it soft. Seat edges and arm tops, which bend the most, go first.

Will conditioner repair cracks?

It can soften dry leather and keep fine cracks from growing, but it cannot close one that has already opened. That needs filler and color.

How do I find out the price?
