Where it shows

The mark copies whatever rubbed against it

Transferred dye takes on a pattern. It collects wherever a garment or pillow presses and moves, so its outline points to the source.

How far the color has sunk in

How long the stain has sat determines the amount of leather dye transfer removal CT furniture needs, and whether we finish with a touch-up.

Leather with transferred dye: a few weeks
A few weeks
The dye is still in the topcoat, and most of the time it comes out fully.
Leather with transferred dye: several months
Several months
The color has worked into the finish and its outline has blurred. It needs extra rounds.
Leather with transferred dye: a faint ghost
A faint ghost
Sometimes left once older dye comes out. A color touch-up hides it.
What we see in Connecticut

The usual sources

Nearly every request we receive comes down to one of the four below.

New dark jeans

Raw or dark-wash denim, which bleeds most during its first weeks.

Winter coats

Dark wool and colored linings that rest on the arms between November and March.

Pillows & throws

Red, navy or patterned covers sitting on a light seat in a bright room.

Car seats

Daily drives in dark work clothes on pale leather, in the front and back rows.

Is it possible to get dye transfer off leather?

In most cases. With coated hides the transferred dye stays mostly in the topcoat, so the leather dye transfer removal CT customers book with us takes it out while leaving the base color alone.

Why is an older mark tougher to remove?

New dye stays close to the top. As months go by it sinks further into the finish and its outline spreads, which means more work and sometimes a faint ghost that a color touch-up has to cover.

Should I try a household cleaner or a magic eraser?

Those tend to remove the topcoat together with the dye, leaving a flat, light spot behind. Send us a picture before you use anything abrasive.

How can I keep it from happening again?

Run new dark denim through the wash several times before it meets light leather, and keep brightly colored pillows elsewhere. Adding a protective topcoat once the dye is out makes future marks far easier to wipe off.
