Find the cause

Was it the thread, the seam or the hide?

A gap in a seam has three possible causes. The cause determines the fix, so we check for it first when your pictures arrive.

Open leather seam, cause: thread failure
Thread failure
The hide is still healthy; just the stitches have worn through or broken.
Open leather seam, cause: seam separation
Seam separation
The stuffing pushed a curved cushion seam until it pulled open.
Open leather seam, cause: edge tear
Edge tear
The stitch holes ran together and the hide ripped next to the seam line.

Our methods

Three ways we close it

How healthy the edge is tells us which method to use. Most leather seam repair CT jobs only call for the first one.

Seam repair technique: restitch
Restitch
Healthy edges: fresh thread goes back through the existing needle holes.
Seam repair technique: back it, then sew
Back it, then sew
Weakened edges: we add a support layer behind the seam so the new stitching has something firm to grip.
Seam repair technique: replace the panel
Replace the panel
Ripped or brittle edges: we cut in a new piece of leather and sew it in place.

Common causes

Why seams open up

Nearly every split seam we see in Connecticut traces back to one of the four below.

Worn-out thread

Cotton or light polyester thread fails after years of sunlight and daily use.

Overfilled cushions

Packed seats and backs put constant strain on one seam.

Dry leather

Months of heated winter air leave edges brittle, so they rip along the needle holes.

Past fixes

Rough hand sewing or adhesive that has failed a second time.

Is a torn-open leather seam repairable?

Yes. When the hide at the edge is still healthy, the leather seam repair CT customers book with us is a restitch through the existing holes. When the edge itself has ripped, we either back it or put in a new panel.

What made the seam come apart?

In most cases the thread gave out sooner than the hide, or an overfilled cushion strained the same place again and again. Leather that has dried and cracked can also rip along its row of stitch holes.

Will anyone notice the fix?

Thread shade and stitch style are matched to the rest of the furniture, so the seam looks continuous. A new panel gets its color matched to its neighbors.

Can I glue it shut in the meantime?

We'd ask you not to. Adhesive soaks into the edges and makes sewing them far more difficult. Tape on the underside, or just avoiding that seat, is the safer choice until we look at it.
