Leather Peeling
Repair CT

Seats shedding flakes, edges curling up, bare base layer showing through. We start by checking whether the material is genuine or bonded, then choose the fix that will hold. For leather peeling repair CT owners can begin with a few photos.

The four stages

How a finish fails

On genuine leather, peeling is where a dried-out finish ends up. If you spot it at stage two or three, the leather peeling repair CT clients need is a smaller job.

Leather finish, stage 1. Intact
1. Intact
The finish is whole and the sheen is uniform.
Leather finish, stage 2. Fine cracking
2. Fine cracking
A drying topcoat breaks into a web of hairlines.
Leather finish, stage 3. Lifting
3. Lifting
Crack edges start curling away from the hide.
Leather finish, stage 4. Flaking

Bits drop off and the base layer is exposed.

Why bonded leather needs another plan

Many peeling sofas that were sold as leather turn out to be bonded or faux. On those, a repair will not hold, and we tell you that up front instead of selling a patch that will peel again.

The top layer lifts off
The top layer lifts off
Bonded leather is a thin polyurethane film glued onto cloth. Once it fails, it peels off in sheets.
Backing shows underneath

Beneath the flakes is cloth instead of leather fiber. That gives it away.
No surface to hold a repair

Color or filler has nothing solid to grip, so it lets go again within months.
Three routes

Repair, new panel or new cover

The right route depends on what the material is and how far the damage reaches. Each leather peeling repair CT quote we write names the route and the reason.

Surface repair
Surface repair
For genuine leather whose finish is lifting in spots: we take off loose flakes, level the area, then recolor and seal it.
Panel replacement
Panel replacement
When a single cushion or panel is badly peeled and the rest is sound, we swap that panel and match its color.
Reupholstery

For bonded or faux leather peeling all over, the frame is worth keeping but the cover is not. New cover, lasting result.
Why it peels

What makes finishes peel faster in Connecticut

From Hartford County living rooms to Shoreline sunrooms, the pieces we look at tend to share a few causes.

Dry winter heat

A long heating season dries the finish out until it splits and releases.

Body oils & lotion

Skin oils break down the topcoat on headrests and arms so it lifts.

Harsh cleaners

Every pass with a household spray or wipe takes a little finish with it.

Sunny rooms

UV through large windows turns the coating brittle, starting on the sunny side.

Why is my leather sofa peeling?

With genuine leather, the pigmented finish dries and stops holding onto the hide, mostly where the piece flexes. With bonded or faux leather, the plastic skin comes away from the cloth behind it. Any leather peeling repair CT customers book with us begins by working out which one it is.

Is peeling leather repairable?

Genuine leather is: we strip the loose finish, rebuild the surface, then recolor and seal it. Bonded leather peeling over an entire seat cannot be fixed in a way that holds, so we will tell you a new cover is the real answer.

How can I tell if mine is bonded?

Check a spot where it has peeled. Cloth or mesh under the flakes means bonded or faux; genuine leather has a fuzzy, suede-like fiber layer there. A close-up photo is enough for us to confirm it.

Once repaired, will it peel again?

On genuine leather, a finish that is rebuilt and sealed correctly holds as well as the factory one. Regular conditioning and keeping it out of strong sun help it stay that way.

How is the job priced?

Send a close-up of the peeling, a photo of the full piece and, if possible, a shot of one flaked spot showing what sits underneath, by text to (347) 310-7483 or by email to office@leatherrestorepro.com.
