Know the pen

The five inks we handle most

Every ink rides in its own carrier and answers to its own remover, which is why our leather ink removal CT work begins by naming the pen.

The pen we see most. Oil-based ink rests in the topcoat, then works deeper over weeks.

Gel and rollerball
Pigment in water. A damp cloth smears it; worked dry, it comes up cleanly.
Example of fountain-pen ink marks on a leather surface
Fountain-pen ink
A thin dye that sinks in fast, into aniline leather most of all.
Example of permanent markers marks on a leather surface
Permanent markers
Alcohol-carried and stubborn. Expect lifting plus a small color touch-up.
Example of printed-paper transfer marks on a leather surface
Printed-paper transfer
Gray film from a newspaper, receipt or printed bag left on the seat.

How a wipe makes ink worse

A well-intended wipe is the usual reason an ink mark grows. Here is one line at four points in time.

Water or a baby wipe begins breaking the ink down.

If a faint shadow remains

Ink left for months may leave a light gray trace once lifted. We match that trace to the hide and seal it, so the panel looks even.

Common sources

Where Connecticut ink marks start

Most leather ink removal CT calls begin with one of four situations.

Children

Pens and markers on the family couch, often pale leather.

Desk work

A pocketed pen rubs a desk chair, stroke after stroke.

Printed paper

Newsprint or a receipt left on a seat leaves a gray film, worst in summer heat.

Reception areas

Sign-in pens and clipboards mark the chairs in lobbies.

Is it possible to get ink out of a leather couch?

Usually, yes. Ballpoint, gel and marker all come out of the finish with our leather ink removal CT service. If older ink leaves a faint shadow, we match its color until it no longer shows.

Will hairspray or rubbing alcohol work?

We'd ask you to skip both. They strip the topcoat along with the ink, so the mark grows into a dull, light patch that is harder to correct.

Can ink that has been there a long time be removed?

Aged ballpoint has generally worked its way down. Lifting lightens it a great deal, and color handles the rest. New ink comes out more easily, so reach us soon.

Is ink harder to deal with on white or cream leather?

Light hides show ink most, yet respond well, since any leftover trace can be matched exactly in color.
