Leather cross-section showing a scratch in the finish, the color layer and the fibers
Depth first

Finish, color or hide

How far down the scratch goes sets the method. Drag a nail across it and check the color inside the line. That test sorts it into one of three groups, and it is where every leather scratch repair CT job begins.

  1. Topcoat onlyYour nail catches on a light line, but the color under it is untouched. Cleaning, leveling and a fresh seal are often enough, with no recolor needed.
  2. Down to the color layerA paler layer shows inside the line. It gets filled, tinted to match your hide, and feathered at the edges until the panel looks continuous.
  3. Into the hideThe leather itself is cut, and the edges stand up fuzzy. Like a small tear, the fibers are bonded flat and built back up before any color is applied.

The process

Four steps on every scratch

  1. Clean and degrease

Hand oils and leftover conditioner are removed so the repair will bond.

  2. Level the line

Lifted edges are glued or sanded down, and deeper lines take a flexible filler.

  3. Tint to your hide

We mix color against the leather right next to the mark, then blend it out.

  4. Seal the sheen

A topcoat set to the original gloss, anywhere from matte to satin, holds it all.

Matching

Three things have to line up

A leather scratch repair CT clients never notice again needs color, sheen and grain all correct together. Miss any one and you can see the spot from the doorway.

The topcoat, matte, satin or glossy, is picked so the spot never catches the light.

The surface pattern runs through the repair, so it feels like the rest of the panel.
Common causes

Where the scratches come from

Most leather scratch repair CT requests we see trace back to one of four sources, and each one marks the leather in its own way.

Dogs and cats

Claw marks on the front of the arms and on back cushions are the call we get most from suburban homes.

Cat scratch repair →

Keys, rings and belts

Fine, crisp lines across the seat front from a pocket or a hand.

Scuff repair →

Moving day

Long scrapes along a sofa's arms and back from door frames and truck straps.

Tear repair →

Kids and toys

Toy cars, buckles, craft scissors: usually low, along the front rail and seat edge.

Is there a scratch you cannot fix?

Very few. Lines in the finish and lines down to the color are everyday leather scratch repair CT work. Once the hide is cut all the way through, the job turns into a tear repair, and we do those too.

Will the repaired spot show?

We aim for a spot you could not find unless someone pointed it out. The color, sheen and grain are matched to the surrounding leather, and the edges are feathered so no outline is left.

Should I try a repair kit first?

A kit can cover a light scratch, but it comes in only a handful of stock colors and sits on the surface like paint. On aniline or semi-aniline hide it tends to leave a darker, shiny patch that is harder to correct afterward.

When can I sit on it again?

For most scratch repairs, the same day, as soon as the finish has dried. If a deeper fill needs more time to cure, we let you know.
